Infinera Customers Capture Top Spots in New Internet Rankings

SUNNYVALE, CA on 22 January 2009

A new ranking of worldwide core Internet Protocol (IP) networks shows that the largest, fastest-growing networks rely on Infinera (Nasdaq: INFN) for their optical networks.

The survey, published by independent Internet analysis company Renesys, ranks the world’s core Internet networks by size. The latest data from Renesys shows that in 2008 Level 3 Communications became the world’s number one provider of core Internet connectivity. Other Infinera customers who rose in the Renesys rankings include Global Crossing, which now ranks third in worldwide core Internet size and second in the US rankings, and Savvis, ranking fifth in the worldwide table.

Renesys tracks Internet routing data worldwide. This analysis is based on the number of customer Internet addresses each core provider serves and the additions to that customer base during 2008. It is an objective measurement gathered from data provided by routers. According to Renesys vice president and general manager Earl Zmijewski, service providers who rose in the rankings were those who signed up more customers (typically other large service providers who do not have their own Internet backbones in a particular region) during 2008. “The companies who are rising in our rankings are those investing in their IP networks, focusing on providing the latest cutting edge hardware, software, and intelligence in their networks, which makes other folks want to use them for core Internet transit,” commented Mr. Zmijewski.

Infinera’s Digital Optical Networking system has rapidly gained market share among core Internet providers because its capacity, scalability, and digital features make it the ideal optical system to support double or triple-digit traffic growth.

“With Internet traffic growing rapidly, the challenge for service providers today is to support that growth without sacrificing profitability,” commented Infinera CEO Jagdeep Singh. “Infinera networks are designed to provide the simplicity, scalability, and ease of use to support a fast-growing network with superior economics.”

The Infinera DTN is a Digital ROADM for long-haul and metro core networks, combining high-capacity DWDM transport, integrated digital bandwidth management, and GMPLS-powered service intelligence in a single platform.
