EDP Renewables commissions 1.9MWp Solar PV system in Malaysia

Distributed generation project adds to the 7 MWp of solar portfolio that EDP Renewables already has in the country.

EDP Renewables (EDPR) has completed the installation of a 1.9MWp rooftop photovoltaic (PV) system in Penang, contributing once again to add renewable energy to Malaysian’s transition. The PV system was developed for PE Land (Penang) Sdn Bhd and is located on the rooftop of Malaysia’s biggest shopping center.

The system is installed for self-consumption via a signed 15-year Power Purchase Agreement. It is structured with 3,584 solar panels and will generate 2,868,000kWh of energy annually. This is equivalent to offsetting more than 1,8 metric tons of carbon emissions*.

This project adds to EDPR’s renewables portfolio in Malaysia, which currently has 7 MWp installed capacity and 1.4 MWp capacity of projects under construction. The company is closely monitoring evolution, strengthening local partnerships, and actively assessing opportunities to support Malaysia’s Renewable Energy Roadmap goals – namely increasing renewables capacity in its energy mix from 25% today to 40% by 2035 and going net zero by 2050. By delivering this project, EDP Renewables hopes to pave the way for further solar deployment in Malaysia, to decarbonize its energy-centric economy towards a cleaner and greener future.

The Asian-Pacific (APAC) region is a key renewables growth market representing more than 40% of global 2020-30 capacity additions, with solar playing a central role, reflecting the strong fundamentals in the region and a strong push for the energy transition. EDP Renewables wants to play an important role in the region’s transition, deploying an additional 1.2 GW of installed capacity between 2023 and 2026.
